BS in CS/CIS and MS in SE Combined Program
Bachelor
of Science in
Computer Science/Computer Information Systems
and
Master of Science in Software Engineering
The Combined Program
An
undergraduate student
majoring in Computer Science (CS) or Computer Information Systems (CIS)
at the
University of Scranton may apply for the Combined B.S. (in CS or CIS)
and M.S.
(in Software Engineering) Program hosted by the Department of Computing
Sciences. Such a student would normally be able to earn both the
Baccalaureate
and Master's degrees in a total of five years of study.
Normally
a baccalaureate degree
takes four years to complete and a master's degree takes an additional
two
years. A student can finish the Combined program in only five years
because it
allows up to 12 credits of graduate work to be applied to both degrees.
For
Computer Science majors,
SE510
replaces CMPS374
SE598 replaces CMPS490
SE504 replaces CS elective
SE521 replaces CS elective (namely, CMPS341)
and for Computer
Information Systems majors,
SE524
replaces CMPS331
SE521 replaces CMPS341
SE598 replaces CMPS490
SE510 replaces CS elective (namely, CMPS374)
SE 510 and SE 598 have been used to satisfy the Writing Intensive requirement of the undergraduate GE Curriculum.
Students in the Combined Program are eligible for graduate assistantships.
Admission Requirements
A
CS or CIS student at the
3.5
after 64 semester hours,
3.4 after 80 semester hours,
3.3 after 96 semester hours, or
3.2 after 112 semester hours.
A student who
has earned credits elsewhere, including transfer credits from other
colleges
and/or AP courses taken in high school, may also apply for the Combined
Program
after he/she has earned at least 32 graded semester hours at the
The
Combined Program prefers
that applicants have at least one summer of internship experience (or
the
equivalent) in the discipline before entering the program and that they
complete
a second summer internship while in the program.
Application
for Admission
A
student who is interested in
the Combined Program is encouraged to talk to the program director of
the
Software Engineering program and to his/her undergraduate academic
advisor.
