Secure VPN


To better protect the servers, applications, and student/faculty data, the Computing Sciences server environment is located behind a VPN. When not directly connected to the Computing Sciences network in the Loyola Science Center the use of the Pulse Secure VPN client is required.

Below are instructions for installing and using the Pulse Secure VPN client.



Instructions:

Installing the Pulse Secure VPN Client (Windows)

  1. Download the Pulse VPN Client installation software. A valid Computing Sciences account is required to download. Installation requires administrative access.

  2. Double-click on the .msi file to launch the Installation Wizard
  3. If prompted with a Security Warning click the Run button

  4. At the Welcome screen click the Next button

  5. Click the Install button to begin the Pulse Secure VPN client installation

  6. Click the Finish button once the installation has finished

Adding a VPN Connection

  1. Launch the Pulse Secure application

  2. Click on the Plus button to add a new connection

  3. Enter a name for the VPN Connection (Example: U of S Computing Sciences VPN). Use the following for the Server URL:

    www.vpn.scranton.edu/cs

    Click the Add button when complete

  4. Click on the Connect button to initiate a VPN connection

  5. When prompted enter your University R# and password. Click Connect when complete

  6. Verify your VPN connection shows as "Connected"

  7. To end your VPN session click on the Disconnect button

Installing the Pulse Secure VPN Client (Mac)

  1. Download the Pulse VPN Client installation software. A valid Computing Sciences account is required to download. Installation requires administrative access.

  2. Double-click on the .dmg file to launch the Installation Wizard
  3. At the Welcome screen of the installer click the Continue button

  4. After selecting the installation destination click the Install button

  5. Once the installation is complete choose to keep the downloaded .dmg file or move to trash. Click Close button when finished

Adding a VPN Connection

  1. Launch the Pulse Secure application and click on the Plus button

  2. Enter a name for the VPN Connection (Example: VPN). Use the following for the Server URL:

    www.vpn.scranton.edu/cs

    Click the Add button when complete

  3. Click on the Connect button to initiate a VPN connection. When prompted enter your University R# and password and click Connect

  4. To end your VPN session click on the Disconnect button

Installing the Pulse Secure VPN Client (Linux)

NOTE: On Ubuntu installing through the Ubuntu Software Center is supported

  1. Download the Pulse VPN Client installation software. A valid Computing Sciences account is required to download. Installation requires administrative access.

  2. Install the client by issuing the following command:
    • Debian-based installation:
      dpkg -i [/path/to/package]
    • RPM-based installation:
      rpm -ivh [/path/to/package]

  3. Install the required application dependencies by executing the PulseClient.sh script with the install_dependency_packages option

    /usr/local/pulse/PulseClient.sh install_dependency_packages

    NOTE: Depending on the version of Pulse that is installed the name of this file may be slightly different. Example: PulseClient_x86_64.sh

Adding a VPN Connection

  1. Launch the Pulse Secure application

  2. Click on the Plus button to add a new connection

  3. Enter a name for the VPN Connection (Example: U of S VPN). Use the following for the Server URL:

    www.vpn.scranton.edu/cs

    Click the Save button when complete

  4. Click on the Connect button to initiate a VPN connection.

  5. When prompted enter your University R# and password and click Connect.

  6. To end your VPN session click on the Disconnect button

Installing the Pulse Secure VPN Client (Android)

  1. Launch the Google Play Store and search for "pulse secure". Install the Pulse Secure application

Adding a VPN Connection

  1. Launch the Pulse Secure application

  2. Click on the Add a Connection button to add a new connection

  3. Enter a name for the VPN Connection (Example: U of S VPN). Use the following for the Server URL:

    www.vpn.scranton.edu/cs

    Click the Add button when complete

  4. Click on the Connect button to initiate a VPN connection.

  5. Click OK when prompted that Pulse Secure wants to establish a VPN connection

  6. Enter your University R# and password and click Sign In

  7. To end your VPN session click on the Disconnect button
