DATA SCIENCE CONCENTRATION

Data science is an emerging interdisciplinary field that uses scientific methods, processes, algorithms and systems to extract knowledge from data. The job-search website Glassdoor has ranked data scientist the best job for the last three years, and IBM predicts that, by 2020, the number of Data Science and Analytics job openings will increase by 364,000 to 2,720,000.

The Data Science Concentration at Scranton is designed to supplement a student's major, allowing the student to acquire core knowledge and skills in the field. Graduates of the concentration are expected to possess a solid and sufficient foundation in data science to pursue graduate studies in data science or a related field or to start a professional career in data science.

Students in Applied Computing, Applied Mathematics, and Computer Science are able to complete the concentration's requirements within their four-year plan of study by utilizing major electives, cognate electives, and/or free electives. Furthermore, upon completing the concentration, Applied Mathematics majors will have satisfied the requirements of the Computer Science minor.

Interested students should contact the program directors Dr. Jason Graham (jason.graham@scranton.edu) or Dr. Yaodong Bi (yaodong.bi@scranton.edu), preferably before their sophomore year.
